Population is a group project where my task is in the modelling and animation. It is done in Maya 1.5 and edited in Softimage|DS. The story is too abstract; tells the beauty of life.
Beyond The Exit is computer animation generated by Alias|Wavefront Maya 1.5 and the editing process is done in Softimage|DS. The duration is approximately 60 seconds. The story tells about the world behind a signboard.
Idea and Concept: The idea comes from my surrounding. From there, I create from my own imagination. Beyond The Exit is a story about something out of this world. It's based on the sign of 'KELUAR' which means exit. I was trying to imagine how the world could be at the other side of the door. I believe that it might be more than just a sign. The greenman will automaticallyl be the main character because he's also the main subject of the sign beside of door. To create the world behind the door, I've make a decision to have as many signage as I can to construct the world. It is the sign world. It must be signage as the foundation.
Story: The story started when the door of a room is closed. The sign of exit is above the door. The green character start to move. And then he left the area, entering the exit door. He exit in the sign world where the place is not the same as the real world. The time is also night. He walk to get back home. Along the way, there are many things happen. But suddenly he stopped when he saw a bus not far fom him. But eventually, he missed the bus. Then a handicapped came. The angry greenman create a crisis between him and the handicap. Because of his carelessness, the greenman got an accident with a bus. Finally, he get back to the exit sign using a wheelchair.
Character: The shape is not much different with the sign itself. The colour is still green. The head is still floating above the body and the body is still gotsharp edges and a rounded neck. The difference are, he got eyes and the shape isn't too flat. He's in 3- dimensional world. I didn't change it much. The reason is to make audience recognise the character when he enter the signage world where all are in 3 dimension.
Mark Renton (Ewan Mc Gregor) has become the reference of this character. He is the main character in the movie Trainspotting. Renton is a smart, young and 'sick' man.
Mr. Greenman is animated using a humanoid skeleton. But it's best to say a 'half humanoid' skeleton because the character isn't much detail in terms of its body part, I mean, no fingers, neck, etc. and also the movement is constraint, as his body shape only can allowed him to move in certain movement, not as free as a human can move. For the ik handle, I use ikRP solver . The same principal I used to the Old Handicap.
Set Design: The main idea in creating the signage world is to make it different from the real world. Refering to all signage which have been collected from the research I've made, a really weird world can be constructed. But it's the matter of how audience can accept this world. I've noticed that the early design for the signage world is too complicated for audience to understand in a 30 second story because the time is too short to give audience more information about the world and to make them understand the concept of it.
Cameras: Before finalizing the shootingboard, 'Beyond The Exit' got 8 scenes. There are 7 cameras will be use for 7 different angles. Three of them got movements which involving craning, tracking and zooming. The rest 4 caneras are only still shot.
The duration of camera craning to the exit sign above the door had been shorten . The reason is, the door scene is not as important the exit signboard. So, it is no need to drag the time at that particular time because the detail of the door isn't much important. The message that I try to send here that this happen at the sign above the door. So, it's enough to show the door to the audience and I'm sure that they got the message.
The camera will track in scene 2 for the whole scene which is approximately about 20 second. The camera will track in a 45 degrees angle so the flat character can be seen rather than in 90 degrees.
